Scars of the face, neck and head are difficult for most people, affecting how they see themselves and reducing their quality of life. Today, there are many procedures and technologies available to improve the appearance of scars, including surgical techniques, laser skin resurfacing, injectable fillers, and microfollicular hair transplantations.

Successful treatment of scarring begins with having realistic expectations.  While it may be possible to eliminate obvious scars, it’s more realistic to expect an improvement that makes scars less noticeable.  As you explore the treatments available, asking questions that allow you to set expectations will help you and your surgeon achieve success.

In your case
No two people and no two scars are identical.  Dr. Sykes spends time with each person who comes in to discuss scar revision to assess the patient’s needs and desires as well as the physical characteristics of the scarring.  After talking with you and examining the scar and surrounding skin, the doctor will openly discuss his assessment and the treatment options available.  In some cases, such as acne scarring, the procedures may be non-surgical, such as laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, injectable fillers and/or microdermabrasion.  Deeper scars or scars caused by burns may require surgery to remove scar tissue, add cartilage to repair destroyed structures, reposition the skin, or loosen tightness in underlying muscles or tendons.  The doctor will discuss the issues you see and the underlying facial structure and provide a recommended plan for treatment that may include a single procedure or a phased approach that will result in a gradual diminishment.
